Where to find it

Four places it is stamped.

A VIN never changes and it is never the registration number. It is 17 characters, letters and digits, and it never contains the letters I, O or Q — those were left out so they cannot be confused with 1 and 0.

01 Licence discOn the windscreen disc itself, printed under the registration number. Easiest place to find it, and you are looking at it every day.
02 WindscreenBottom corner on the driver’s side, stamped into a small plate you read from outside the car.
03 Driver’s door frameOn the pillar the door closes against, on a sticker with the tyre pressures and build date.
04 Under the bonnetStamped into the strut tower or the bulkhead on most German cars. The one that survives when stickers do not.

Why it matters

The wrong part for the right car.

It is the most expensive routine failure in the parts trade, and this stock list is full of reasons why.

01 Arms that look identicalThe BMW E81 and E87 lower arms are visually the same part. They do not interchange. The listing has to say so, and you have to know which one you own.
02 M cars are not the same carHalf the suspension listings here read "excluding M3" or "M-Sport only". A badge on the boot is not proof of which suspension was fitted at the factory.
03 A facelift mid-model yearBuild date decides the part more often than the model year does. The VIN carries the year; we ask the factory for the rest.
04 The return costs more than the partA wrong part means a second delivery, a car on a lift with nothing to bolt to it, and a week gone. Thirty seconds up front prevents all of it.

Honest limits

What this does not do.

This reads what the VIN itself encodes: the manufacturer, the country the car was built in, and the model year. It does not pull a full options list, and it will not tell you which of two brake packages your car left the factory with.

That last step is a person, not software. The point is that the person on the other end of WhatsApp starts with your exact vehicle instead of extracting it over five messages. If the VIN will not decode, the button still opens WhatsApp with whatever you typed — you are never stuck.
